Christus Rex

Well its my favorite feast of the year - Christus Rex-Christ the King. I have thought long about the final picture of God given to us by St. John:

At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits[a] of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[b]

who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.”

How different this scene from the one we will see in a little more than one months time-the baby in the manger. Sometimes it is hard to wrap my mind around the fact that the baby in the manger is the Lord of Creation. Yet this is clearly set out for us by St John in his hymn at the beginning of his gospel chapter 1" 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him."

This is the same personnel Jesus who we prayed to as children, do you remember the prayer? Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray dear Lord my soul to keep...this same Jesus.

The baby in the manger, the very young man at the temple, the young man starting his ministry, the Teacher, the Sacrifice, the Risen Lord, the coming King, Lord of Creation. He is the same personnel God, desirous of fellowship with each and every one of his created beings.

The is a lot of evil in the world, heck some days there's a lot of evil in me, but some day the Lord of creation will set it all straight. I pray He will set me straight, for I do want to become his disciple.

I have thought a lot about lately about this question: How good should a disciple be? The answer I have come up with is quite daunting. Here is the answer, I have come up with-If a person in need prays for an angel to help him, you should show up. When the person says he's thankful for your help, but he asked for an angel, I feel that I should answer,"I know you asked God for an angel, but he sent you someone better, He sent you a disciple." Only through the power of the Living God of creation would I be able to honestly answer this way. The only way to be given is to ask God" Lord make me faithful, Lord let me seek holiness." If I could do that I would truly be a disciple.

Happy Christus Rex

Big D
